A pillar drill would be at the top. A heavy decent corded drill with a low (low speed) gearbox will cope with ease. Half the battle is a good bit sharper. For small holes that can get pieces of wood with a base location. To quickly search for larger holes use a little flat. The biggest holes to use auger bits. The specification will tell you that drilling is the ability to drill diameter wood (and masonry).
