Thermite oxidizer help please?
Hi,,The other day I had bought a little bit of tHermite. I lite if off. And it did not melt the piece of steel I put under the thermite. I then tried using potassium nitrate as an oxidizer. But the potassium nitrate only seemed to lower the burning temp. of the thermite. Making it less effective. I am also using Black Iron oxide. Should I be using red iron Oxide. What is thedifferencee. Also Is there any otheroxidizerr I could us that is not poisonss.
I am using a sparkler to light the mixture. I know the iron oxide has the oxygen in it. But,,,,the miltary uses baurim nitrate to help feed the reacton in the thermite gernades.
Thermite is basically aluminum powder with iron oxide (Fe2O3 - red) powder plus some initiator like a magnesium strip placed into an small oxidizer plug in the charge. The actual thermite oxidizer is the iron oxide, since the aluminum essentially takes the oxygen away from the iron. I am not surprised about the effect of the KNO3, it does not help in the reaction. Black iron oxide (Fe3O4) has less oxygen per iron than red iron oxide, so use the red kind.
