I have a bathroom I'm remodeling myself. The house was built in the late 40's. The tub is metal and I believe its either enamel coated steel or cast iron. When I bang on the side it sounds hollow. It runs the length of the bathroom, so 3 out of the 4 sides are walls. How would I begin to take the thing out? Would a reciprocating saw be appropriate? How about a sledge hammer? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Go out first and see a cast iron bath tub and compare it to a steel enamel tub. So you know what you got. If it is "part of the wall" a regular nailing hammer will do to break off the plaster near the tubs upper flange. Once the mud is out of the way(or lower row of tiles and mud) you can see and remove the nails that hold it in place. Next remove the drain and any plumbing fittings that are "part of the tub". The drain is screwed down into the steel tub and goes into the plumbing. There may be a rubber washer under the chrome so unscrewing it is going to be challenging to start it. Not a finger job. Also remove the overflow plate at that end of the tub(its that chrome cover) and sometimes the chain for the plug is attached to it.
You now should be getting very close to being able to move the tub. You will have to "lift it" at the drain end so that it frees itself from the plumbing. And just wiggle it out. No need to destroy the wall with a hammer or saw. It was slipped in, so equal force is needed to remove it.
