why does my retainer hurt so much?
i got my retainer in today and i cant talk right, its very hard to eat, and i can't play my flute. its not l;ike a normal wire retainer it like insulin braces but with a palate. its supposed to make my teeth straighter than the braces did. because they are supposed to move my teeth there is like an extra cm of plastic so how and i supposed to bit into food. how can i get rid of the pain and be able to play my flute?
i did ask if i should eat with it in and they said i would be better off doing so. so far the only thing i can eat without it hurting is kettlecorn. i can't play my flute its so depressing. i can sort of get the notes out but it sounds as bad as it did in 5th grade when i first started playing.
Ouch you have my sympathy. I've been there, done that. Are you sure you're supposed to be eating with the retainer in your mouth?
The retainer I had was made to slip in place at the roof of my mouth and the wire came around the front of my teeth. I wasn't supposed to eat with it in and if affected my talking and flute playing too (not mocking here...I did play the flute).
Every time there's a foreign object put in your mouth or it's adjusted, it takes some time for the mouth to get accustomed to it.
On the other hand though...maybe there's a minor maintenance thing that needs to be done with your reatainer. Mine had a small shaving of plastic out of place and was enough to cause a lot of discomfort.
Give it a few days and if there's no improvement, call your orthodontist abou it.
