Extended Nimh Battery
Does the length of use of rechargeable batteries last longer if they take longer to charge?
I have NiMH rechargable batts with a one hour charger and they don't seem to last as long as regular batteries. The package was boasting the batteries to have a 2500mAh capacity for extended usage, which i don't understand what that means exactly. Does that mean milli amps? I use them in a remote for a Wii and regular batteries seem to last several days longer but with regular use last about a week, so these rechargeable batteries are lasting maybe 5 days if i'm lucky. I didn't get the charge station made for the Wii because if you look at customer reviews on retail store sites, people say they are junk and you're better off buying rechargeables not made specifically for the system. But anyway, i'm wondering if beacuse the batteries are only charging for an hour does that mean they will need recharging quicker? Should i get a charger that takes longer to charge? Thanx in advance
The 2500 mAh is miIliamp hours. This is a measure of capacity or how much energy the battery is able to provide. If the batteries are good and the charger is working properly they will get the same charge regardless of the method of charge. Most fast chargers do a good job and it shouldn't matter if you use a fast charger or a slow charger but some fast chargers don't charge the battery all the way in fast mode. They switch to a slow mode when the battery is almost charged. If the indicator changes at this time you you take the battery out right away you are using a battery that isn't fully charged. Try leaving it in the charger for another hour or two and see if that helps. However, NiMH batteries are susceptible to self-discharge. They lose about 30% of their charge per month just sitting around. This makes a recharable battery a poor choice for things like remote controls that use very little power and sit much of the time. I always use standard batteries in these type of things. But even if you change the batteries every 5 days instead of 7 days, you still save a lot of money over having to buy all those non-rechargeable batteries.
